Introduction

An error has occurred is the major new book project by Melbourne-based photographer Rohan Hutchinson. The publication is based around a core series of large-format photographs that Hutchinson took during an expedition to the Arctic in early 2017. The focus of the expedition was to record and document the beauty, immensity and diversity of the Arctic landscape in this particular moment. Upon returning to Australia, Hutchinson set about reinterpreting and expanding the scope of the resulting photographs in a bid to respond to the impact of climate change on the Arctic region and address our responsibilities not just Australians, but as global citizens.

The final works comprise of two components. The first is a series of large-format photographs that capture the beauty, enormity, tonality and specificity of the winter landscape. The second is a series of physical and chemical reworkings of these photographic prints. Executed in Australia, this series saw Hutchinson re-sensitise the original C-type photographs with photographic emulsion liquid and expose them to the harsh Australian sun. Pared with their originals, the works reveal a ravaged, blackened Arctic landscape. The works act as both a poignant allegory for the global resonance of our actions and as a précis on the limits and potentials of the photographic medium, taking Hutchinson’s research-based practice to new creative terrains in the process.

An error has occurred – which follows Hutchinson’s previous artist books A Brief Stroll Whilst Inspecting Architecture (2014), Elemental (2016) and The City in Itself (2017) – will be a significant publication featuring more than 20 images and an essay by writer, editor and publisher Dan Rule. It will designed by celebrated London studio Daly & Lyon and published by internationally renowned Melbourne-based imprint Perimeter Editions. The book will be launched at the NGV Melbourne Art Book Fair in March 2018, with further subsequent launches at Offprint London, Tokyo Art Book Fair and New York Art Book Fair. The book will be distributed by Perimeter Distribution (Australia/New Zealand) and Idea Books (Europe, North America, Asia).

Expressions of Interest

Perimeter Editions is securing expressions of interest from a small group of collectors, potential acquisitors and other interested parties in support of the project, which, in its developmental stages, garnered support from Arca Swiss among others. The artist and Perimeter Editions have made an edition of major two-part work that features in the An error has occurred book available for acquisition in direct support of the raw printing costs of the project (approx. AU $10,000). As gesture of appreciation for their support, acquisitors of artwork will be acknowledged in the book and will receive two signed copies of the book in addition to the artwork.
