Throughout his childhood, Rick van der Klooster spent school holidays in the Alps with his mother. It was only when she became terminally ill in 2013 that he realised how special the landscape had become for them both. There, his mother could continue to live in his thoughts. The fear of going back and really losing her kept him from setting foot near her mountains for a long while. For years, he visited his mother’s guesthouse only in his dreams. They talked about being dead, how the world moves on, and how to deal with that. In 2018, he returned to the mountains of his youth. Between the Mountain and the River is a photography project focusing on grief, transience, and nature.
