In Gasoline, writer, curator and artist David Campany has collected images from the archives of several North American newspapers depicting various gas stations from 1944 to 1995. Although gas stations are generally considered lacklustre sites, Campany's project places them in something of a culturally indicative light. In an interview with George Kaplan, Campany suggests that the gas station provides "a good measure of what's going on in society" due to their recurring presence in the news as sites of accidents or crimes. The black-and-white photographs have been published in their original form and some feature red crop marks perhaps made by the newspaper's picture editor or layout team as well as further information such as dates and captions.
